In Romania the ovine export is free, including to the EU countries; any quantity, both sexes are allowed for export, but only respecting the laws in force in Romania:

• Order of the Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development no.255/2004
• Order of the Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development no.502/2005

Accordingly to the statistics of the National Sanitary Veterinary and for Food Safety Agency, the ovine effectives in Romania, in September 28, 2005, were as follows:

Having regard to this situation, both PACERO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development developed strategies for the quantitative and qualitative growth of the Romanian ovine effectives, through the rapid development and implementation of several programs, in order to encourage the ovine breeders, and in order to protect and improve the ovine effectives.

The objectives for implementing these strategies are:

• the amelioration of the genetic value of the animals, in order to increase the meat production;
• the growth of efficiency in the ovine breeding sector;
• the reinforcement of controls in the export activities;
• introducing the statistic licenses for export, in order to eliminate the unfair competition.
